释义 〔cottage〕A small summer house. 散布在河边的几套不整洁的房子〔exposure〕Our house has a southern exposure.我们的房子朝南〔between〕According to a widely repeated but unjustified tradition,“between is used for two, and among for more than two.” It is true thatbetween is the only choice when exactly two entities are specified: the choice between (not among ) good and evil, the rivalry between (not among ) Great Britain and France. When more than two entities are involved, however, or when the number of entities is unspecified, the choice of one or the other word depends on the intended sense.Between is used when the entities are considered as distinct individuals; among, when they are considered as a mass or collectivity. Thus in the sentenceThe bomb landed between the houses, the houses are seen as points that define the boundaries of the area of impact (so that we presume that none of the individual houses was hit). InThe bomb landed among the houses, the area of impact is considered to be the general location of the houses, taken together (in which case it is left open whether any houses were hit). By the same token, we may speak ofa series of wars between the Greek cities, which suggests that each city was an independent belligerent, or ofa series of wars among the Greek cities, which allows as well the possibility that the belligerents were shifting alliances of cities. For this reason, among is most appropriate to indicate inclusion in a group: 根据重复多次但没什么根据的传统看法,“between 用于两者之间,而 among 用于二者以上。” 当只提到两个实体时,between 确实是唯一的选择: the choice between (而不用 among ) good and evil(善与恶之间的选择),the rivalry between (不用 among ) Great Britain and France(英法间的对抗)。 The bomb landed between the houses The bomb landed among the houses 同样的表示法,我们可以说a series of wars between the Greek cities, 表示每个城市是独立的参战者,我们也可以说a series of wars among the Greek cities, 表示存在某些城市做为联合参战者的可能性。 因此,among 最适合表示包括在一群成一组人之内: 〔glow〕"the evening glow of the city streets when the sun has gone behind the tallest houses"(Seán O'Faoláin)“太阳躲到了最高大的房子后面,彤红的晚霞照亮了市里的街巷”(肖恩·奥法莱恩)〔glorify〕Your descriptions have glorified an average house into a mansion.你把一幢普通的房子美化成了一座豪华公寓〔shoot〕The burning building shot sparks onto the adjacent roof. He shot an angry look at me.点了火的房子把火星溅到了隔壁的房顶上,他怒气冲冲地瞪了我一眼〔buccaneer〕The Errol Flynn-like figure of the buccaneer pillaging the Spanish Main may seem less dashing if we realize that the termbuccaneer corresponds to the word barbecuer. The first recorded use of the French wordboucanier, which was borrowed into English, referred to a person on the islands of Hispaniola and Tortuga who hunted wild oxen and boars and smoked the meat in a barbecue frame known in French as aboucan. This French word came from an Arawakan or Tupinamba word meaning "a rack, sometimes used for roasting or for storing things, or a racklike platform supporting an Indian house.”The original barbecuers seem to have subsequently adapted a more remunerative way of life, piracy, which accounts for the new meaning given to the word.Buccaneer is recorded first in 1661 in its earlier sense in English; the sense we are familiar with is recorded in 1690. Buccaneer 的早些时候的意义于1661年最早用英语记录下来, 而我们所熟悉的该词的含义是于1690年记录下来的〔harem〕A house or a section of a house reserved for women members of a Moslem household.闺房:在伊斯兰教国家女性家庭成员居住的房子或房子的一部分〔building〕"The essential thing in a building . . . is that it be strongly built, and fit for its uses" (John Ruskin). “最必需的事是一幢房子…建筑牢固而且适于使用的房子” (约翰·拉斯金)。〔guardroom〕A room used by guards on duty.卫兵室:卫兵值勤时所用的房子〔warehouse〕To institutionalize (people) in usually deficient housing and in conditions in which medical, educational, psychiatric, and social services are below par or absent:不良安置:把(人)置入到医疗、教育、精神病和社会服务低于社会平均水平或根本不存在这些服务的差劲的房子或条件中去:〔Glaspell〕American writer who cofounded an alternative theater group, the Provincetown Players (1915), and wrote novels, short stories, and plays, such asAlison's House (1930). 格拉斯佩尔,苏珊·吉丁:(1882-1948) 美国作家,创建了一个可替换演出剧团——普罗文斯敦剧团(1915年),写有小说、短故事以及剧本,例如《艾利森的房子》 (1930年) 〔hacienda〕The house of the owner of such an estate.这种地产所有者的房子〔disrepair〕a house in disrepair.年久失修的房子〔cottage〕A small, single-storied house, especially in the country.屋棚:一种小的,单层的房子,尤指乡村中〔detached〕a house with a detached garage.有一个独立车库的房子〔proportion〕The house, of Spanish colonial design, has rooms with graciousness of proportion and beautiful details.这座西班牙殖民时期设计风格的房子,各房间都有和谐的比例及精美的细微部分。〔Elizabethtown〕A city of central Kentucky south of Louisville.
